2 people were arrested in Broward county yesterday for beating a homeless man and charged with attempted murder.
The legislature has recently declared homeless people part of a protected class. The new law classifies an attack on a homeless person as a "hate crime". Anyone charged with a hate crime faces a harsher sentence.
The hate crime statute pursuant to 775.085 defines a hate crime as during the commission of a felony or misdemeanor there is evidence that prejudice based upon race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, Religion, sexual orientation, national origin, mental or physical disability, or advanced age of victim occurred.
