On February 26, 2013, 34-year-old Robert Burton of Miami Beach was officially convicted of human trafficking and sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating and strangling a 31-year-old woman, who was allegedly one of at least six women Burton had forced into prostitution in South Florida and Nevada. Burton was additionally accused of abducting his 7-year-old son, who was one of two children he had with the victim.
According to court documents, Burton was found guilty of domestic battery by strangulation, deriving support from prostitution, kidnapping and interfering with parental custody. Burton's mother is currently awaiting trial for her role in the young boy's kidnapping. Burton's official sentencing marked the first conviction for the Miami-Dade Human Trafficking Unit. Similar charges were filed in Nevada, however no conviction against Burton was ever handed down.
