What Is the Jessica Lunsford Act?
The Jessica Lunsford Act was passed in 2005. The law was passed and signed into law by then-governor Jeb Bush in response to the tragic murder of Jessica Lunsford in Homosassa Springs, FL. This law applies to those who have access to schools and school campuses and increased penalties for certain sex crimes against children, as well increasing the ongoing law enforcement scrutiny regarding where they live.
With regard to those involved in schools, any non-instructional personnel that are employees of the school district or contracted by the school district that are allowed on school ground when students are present are subject to Level 2 background screening described in § 1012.32. Those that fall into this category include vendors, individuals, or any entity that is currently contracted to the school board.
